Yоu'll hаve twо hоurs to write the essаy. To prepаre, review the three sources. Review all your notes and prewriting activities. Review your draft and the feedback you received, as well as the feedback you gave yourself. Then, and this is THE MOST IMPORTANT PART, practice writing the essay at least once before taking the exam. Set aside two hours, turn on a timer, and get to writing! And if you can do it again, then do it again! Practice will prepare you for the exam. If you have been truly doing all the work leading up this, and if you review that work, and if you practice at least once, you will be prepared for this exam. Now, once you are in the actual exam, structure your time! Set aside some time at the beginning (maybe 5-10 minutes) to plan--you might even sketch out a brief outline, jot down your thesis, and maybe even write down topic sentences. But give yourself direction. If there are quotes/details/paraphrases/summaries that you've memorized, go ahead and write those down before you forget them. As you write--and you should dedicate a solid 90 minutes overall to the revision itself--be sure that you are incorporating specifics from all the sources and from your own experience! Lack of development is the number one reason students don't do well on an essay. It's ok if you didn't memorize any quotes (if you did, that's great, though!), but you must integrate paraphrases and summaries. That should be part of your studying for this essay, by the way; you should review all three sources and your notes on them until you feel comfortable writing about them with great specificity. Keep in mind the feedback that you received on your draft as you work on this revision.  Give yourself time at the end--maybe 15-20 minutes--to edit and proofread. Look out for all of those things we've studied so far (commas, punctuation, sentence variety, etc.). Make sure you use in-text citation for summaries and paraphrases, as well as direct quotes (if you've memorized a couple to include). You will be required to have a Works Cited page. I will supply all the information you need to create the Works Cited entries. In Canvas, I don't think you can create a hanging indent, so I won't take off points for that, and I also think it's impossible to create a Works Cited on a new page (as one is supposed to), so I won't count off for that. But "Works Cited" should be centered and the entries should be alphabetized. Each entry should be properly formatted. Part of your studying, then, is to memorize the MLA format for each source. Belоw аre twо scenаriоs describing reаl dating methods that we didn't discuss in class. Apply your knowledge from lecture and your readings to identify each scenario as either absolute or relative dating. Scenario #1: The earth's magnetic polarity hasn't always been North; prior to about 780 kya the magnetic pole was South (your compass would have pointed South instead of North). You observe that a recent fossil find is located above a layer with reversed polarity and therefore conclude that it must be younger than 780 kya. What type of dating is described in this example? [relative]   Scenario #2: When 238Uranium decays it releases fragments that actually scratch the internal surface of some types of rocks. Knowing the half-life of 238U, you count the scratches in the rock to estimate how much 238U was left in the rock and estimate the age of your strata as 200 kya.  What type of dating is described in this example? [absolute]
