During the Vedic Age, Aryаns cоnquered the Indiаn sub-cоntinent аnd impоsed an extremely rigid hierarchy called [BLANK-1]. This strict social hierarchy was divided into tiers known as varna. At the top of the hierarchy was the Brahmin Varna, made up of priests and academics, followed by the Kshatryia Varna which included kings and warriors. Lower strata included the Vaishya Varna, made up of merchants and landowners as well as the Sudra Varna which was composed of commoners, peasants, and servants. Over time, another even lower strata emerged and became known as the Untouchables – pariahs who faced extreme restrictions and persecutions. Social mobility was not possible in this society and membership to each varna was hereditary.
