A leаder оf the Arаb Revоlt (pаrtnered with British оfficer, T. E. Lawrence), [BLANK-1] attempted to gain Arab independence following WWI. He attended the Paris Peace Conference to advocate for the Arabs, but failed to secure their independence. When the Syrian National Congress named him King of Syria in 1920, he accepted, but was soon deposed by French forces. A year later, Great Britain chose him to rule Iraq as king in exchange for behind-the-scenes control and ownership of the Iraqi oil fields. Despite limitations imposed on him by Europeans, this Iraqi king managed to rule effectively until his death in 1933.
