Thоugh the study оf pоlitics is often аpplied to studies of government, sociologists note thаt politics аrise in various other groups. Identify and analyze the political structure of a group of which you are a member by describing the structure of the group (What statuses do individuals hold? How are those positions arranged? What role(s) do they perform?). Then, note the extent to which that structure compares to one of the types of government noted in this lesson (i.e. Is the group a dictatorship, monarchy, representative democracy, etc...?). Finally, consider what you think it would be like to be a member of that group if a different structure to emerge (i.e. If it is currently comparable to a representative democracy but became a dictatorship, what would that be like?).Hint: Some ideas of groups to consider would be your family, your group of friends, a class of which you are a member, your school, your workplace, your religious organization (if you are a member), the military (if you are a member), a sports team (if you are a member), etc...Note: Unlike most governments, the political structure of other groups may not always be fixed and the structures may only be apparent at specific times and places. If a group of friends is playing a cooperative board game, "quarterbacking" is said to occur when one member tries to dictate everyone else's moves throughout the game. You can then say that, in that moment, the group has a structure similar to that of a dictatorship.
