Shоrt Essаy (30 pоints):  Chоose ONE of the following topics/contexts аnd write а short essay (3-4 paragraphs; 400-500 words) about part of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. An essay has an opening with thesis, body, and conclusion--leave spaces between paragraphs.  This is a personal reflection about your exploration of the text. Write in first-person and explain how you developed your ideas about the questions, techniques, and examples you found interesting, strange, or revealing.  Proofread  your answer carefully standard American English conventions (capitalize the first-person pronoun "I" every time, write in complete sentences, etc.).     Analyze cultural references/examples in “The General Prologue” (role of faith, formal/informal religion, critique of church, etc.).  How do the references/examples compare in surprising or interesting ways?  Use specific textual examples from The General Prologue to support your points. Analyze two literary elements in “The Pardoner’s Prologue and Tale” (irony, symbolism, figurative language, narration, etc.). Why does Chaucer use the technique(s) in interesting or significant ways?  Give specific textual examples from “The Pardoner’s Prologue and Tale” to support your points. Analyze gender conflicts in “The Nun’s Priest’s Tale” (masculine versus feminine traits; male/female power struggles; gender roles, etc.). Use specific textual examples from “The Nun’s Priest’s Tale” and tell why the examples are surprising or interesting and why they matter to the overall reading of the tales.   Make your thesis and topic sentences specific and complex.  You must use the words “interesting because . . . ,” “significant because . . . ,” or “strange because . . . .” throughout your analysis to show why the author’s techniques are worth analyzing.
