Design а Rоmаn City (see directiоns belоw) (300-600 words): Congrаtulations Emperor Montgomerius! You just conquered a huge new territory in the north! Your troops have found a nice wooded area near the River Seine that they think would be a great spot for a new provincial capital. Now you need to send a letter to your army engineers letting them know exactly what the city should look like. This should be a city fit for an emperor! It should be so magnificent that all of your new subjects will be grateful that they were conquered. Your new citizens will need entertainment and comfort. How will you provide it? What kind of houses will they live in and where will they socialize? How should will you lay out the streets and what public buildings should your engineers construct? What materials will the engineers need to acquire? What buildings will need to be made of marble and what can be built of brick and concrete? The materials suit some forms and not others (for example, it wouldn't be smart to use marble to build a groin vault or a dome, but you will need marble if you want to build a victory monument in your honor.) Your new subjects will also need to be reminded constantly of your military power and control over them. Perhaps you should build some monuments? Oh! And don't forget to thank the gods for your glorious victory over the barbarians! You'll need to install a governor and give him some incentive to travel to this uncharted new territory. I hear the countryside in this area is beautiful. Perhaps you and other elites could vacation there? Your engineers should probably build you a luxurious new vacation villa. What should they include? How should they decorate it? Your city should reflect who you are as am emperor. Are you a sophisticated and cultured lover of the arts or a maniacal tyrant who has no time for such things? Should your city be an elegant place for elites to enjoy the finer things in life or would you rather it reflect your military might and prowess? Be creative, but make sure that your town is a ROMAN city like all of the others in the Empire. You wouldn't want anyone to mistake your new capital for a barbarian city. Be specific about what the town and each building will look like. Your letter should be 300-600 words and include at least 5 terms (in bold) from the study guide. You do not have to include images or illustrations, but if you do, they should be in addition to two pages of descriptive text.
