Self-driving cаrs аre аlready being tested and used оn public rоads in sоme parts of the country. Supporters of these vehicles argue that the technology makes transportation safer. Human drivers cause many crashes because they become distracted, tired, impaired, or simply make mistakes. Self-driving technology can reduce these crashes. Self-driving cars can also provide transportation for people who can’t drive themselves. However, self-driving cars have been involved in crashes, including some serious ones. The technology has shown difficulty responding to unexpected conditions, construction, actions of pedestrians, and other drivers. As the technology becomes more common, policymakers must decide how much risk is acceptable. A state’s legislature is considering rules for self-driving cars. A proposal would require manufacturers to meet safety standards and demonstrate that the vehicles are safer than human drivers before they can be used. The legislature must decide who should be responsible in the event of a crash. If the car makes a mistake, should the owner be responsible, or should the company that made the car or developed its software be responsible?
