Questions

Pаrt III: Essаy (50 pоints) Chооse one of the following topics аnd write a terrific, far-reaching essay, one that is rich in critical thought and specific detail. Minimum word count: 500 (“A” essays usually go well beyond the minimum); +1 for a word count. Make sure your essay has an introduction, at least three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Hint: shorten the intro and conclusion—let the bulk of the paper be the body paragraphs. Bring in numerous specific details from the work and reference key ideas from the videos and the PowerPoints in your analysis.   Topic A:  Discuss Oedipus in a critical light, as a character who brings about his own demise through his own actions.  How do his tragic flaws of rage and paranoia ultimately sow the seeds for his own destruction?  In your essay, be sure to discuss the following: BP #1: His interactions with Creon and Tiresias.  How does he treat them, and why?  Where are his character flaws revealed?  BP #2: The scene at the Triple Crossroads with Laius.  How is Oedipus’ own rage a catalyst for the tragic events that unfold? BP #3: Oedipus’ own impulsive acts after the discovery of his parentage.  Be sure to discuss his own act of self-punishment. Note: **You may add a 4th body paragraph discussing another element related to the topic or expand any one section to two body paragraphs. Conclusion: How ultimately do Oedipus’ own choices bring about his demise?  What commentary is Sophocles making about free will?    Topic B:   Discuss Oedipus in a more sympathetic fashion, as a pawn of fate who cannot escape the nets of destiny.  In your paper, be sure to discuss: BP 1: The events in Oedipus’ life as a child, both in Thebes and Corinth; how is his tragic fate decided for him? BP #2: The scene with the drunkard at the banquet in Corinth and his subsequent attempt to avoid fate.  How does that ultimately lead him to the Triple Crossroads and Laius? In what way is he controlled by Fate here? Be sure to discuss that Triple Crossroad scene in detail. BP #3: His discovery of the truth, including his interview with the shepherd from Thebes and the messenger from Corinth. How does Oedipus’ pursuit of truth seal his tragic fate? Note: **You may add a 4th body paragraph discussing another element related to the topic or expand any one section to two body paragraphs. Conclusion: In the final analysis, how does Sophocles create sympathy for Oedipus, this man who once saved Thebes from the Sphinx?  What is his thematic message in the play?
