Text B - The Secоnd Signаture [1] Rаin ticked аgainst the pump statiоn’s metal rоof. Inside, a loose light buzzed above damp inspection forms. Mira had one evening left in her training placement. Her uncle Tomas, the station supervisor, would recommend whether she stayed. [2] Before leaving, Tomas had told her to copy yesterday’s inspection results onto the new form. “Nothing changed,” he said. “Keep the paperwork moving.” He had taught her the job and driven her to every early shift. She wanted his approval. She also wanted the people downhill to be safe. [3] Then a maintenance worker reported a new crack near the main pump. The spare pump was already out for repair. Stopping the main pump during the storm might allow water to rise; running it without inspection might cause a worse failure. Mira could not inspect the crack herself. [4] Her pen hovered above the word CHECKED. If she called for an emergency inspection, Tomas might lose a night’s pay and withdraw his recommendation. If she copied the form, everyone would keep working with the same unanswered question. [5] She called the on-call engineer. “I can report what I saw on the form,” she said. “I can’t tell you the pump is safe.” The engineer ordered a temporary pause and sent a crew to check both the crack and a backup drainage route. Mira wrote the times and decisions in the log, including her own name. [6] Near midnight, Tomas returned. He read the log without speaking. Mira expected an argument. Instead, he placed a second inspection form beside hers. Someone had already marked it HOLD FOR REVIEW and signed the bottom. The signature was blurred by water. [7] “Did you make that call?” she asked. [8] Tomas folded his wet coat over a chair. Beyond the window, lights moved along the drainage ditch. He looked at the second form, then at Mira. “The crew is here,” he said. [9] She slid both forms into a dry folder. The pump’s future—and the name on the second form—would have to wait.
