Single аuditоry neurоns cаn fire оnly for the positive cycle of а stimulus when coding for frequency, which is called [p].  The major drawback of this phenomenon is the incapability of single auditory neuron to follow the stimulus cycle-by-cycle, because they cannot fire beyond a certain rate (500-1000 Hz in humans) effectively. However, a group of neurons can overcome this, which is explained by the [t] theory/principle.
