Argument: Accоrding tо The Chаnge Argument thаt mоtivаtes Aristotle’s general theory of knowledge, one can never know the hidden essences of things; one can only know their accidental properties via an "inductive leap." Taking all talk of "hidden" essences to be meaningless, logical empiricists introduced the analytic vs. synthetic distinction in an attempt to make essences accessible to science in a purely linguistic way: stipulated analytic truths capture what is essential, while synthetic truths merely report accidental generalizations drawn from experience. Ironically, this attempt is what leads to the mind-dependence problem for the logical empiricist’s Best Systems Account of Laws: They think scientific laws are supposed to describe the essential generalizations in nature; but, by taking the laws to be analytic, they end up being stipulated within a linguistic framework rather than discovered in nature as Aristotle believed. Therefore, even if we interpret Aristotle as being an empiricist, he would have rejected logical empiricism. Essay Question: Provide two well-targeted objections to the above argument's soundness, drawing on detailed explanations of the relevant course material. (Hint: you should begin each objection by stating your target (e.g., "The first reason the argument is unsound is that it falsely assumes [insert target]."). Then, you should explain the relevant material in detail. For each objection, your explanation might include (but need not be limited to) one or more of the following: (A) Aristotle's theory of general knowledge (including his change argument), (B) the analytic vs. synthetic distinction as a replacement for Hume's Fork when responding to the rationalist's mathematical challenge to empiricism), as well as (C) the "best systems" account of scientific laws and the mind-dependence problem raised against it. Finally, provide a clear and concise summary of your argument against your stated target.)

Michаel Lewis describes the оrgаnizаtiоnal culture arоund Sam Bankman-Fried and the effective altruism movement as “cult-like.” After senior managers challenged Bankman-Fried in 2018, they and about half the staff left, while the true believers stayed. (a) Using a culture concept from the course, explain one way Alameda/FTX's culture helped the company grow. (b) Using a different culture concept, explain one way the same culture contributed to its collapse.
