Connecting Statement: There are many factors that can create differences including meaning, having a hard time letting go of things you have had for so long, or simply not feeling like cleaning everything out. Women tend to be more intentional with what they keep. Men, however, struggle with finding ways to remember their pasts. Thesis: Steve Almond tries to explain to all women in married couples that AMJ, Accumulated Male Junk, is more than just clutter by talking about his experience as a married man, listing reasons as to why AMJ is important to men, and providing his own examples of AMJ. Ethos: Starter: In the article "In Defense of Male Clutter", Steve Almond grabs the audience's attention and trust as he talks about his experiences with having AMJ as a married man. GP1: He says "One of the best decisions I've made in my three-plus years of marriage was to move all our belongings into our new home by myself." and later states that it saved them from "having to endure a great ordeal, one known to couples all over the world as the Inspection of Accumulated Male Junk (AMJ)." SP1: to gain trust he starts off by explaining he has been married for more than three years proving that he knows what it is like as a married man with AMJ. GP2: "My wife did discover and examine my AMJ. She did a lot of sighing. She did a lot of blowing dust off the sundry objects, then coughing theatrically. When she came to the inflatable shark, she merely shook her head. 'Is there some reason,' she wondered out loud, 'that a 40-year-old man needs an inflatable shark?'" SP2: By including his experience of when his wife found out about his AMJ, it helps the audience relate to it and therefore believing him even more. Pathos: Starter: In addition to gaining the audiences trust through his own experiences, Steve Almond also tries to emotionally connect with his audience by listing reasons AMJ is important to men. GP1: He says "Look, we all need something to remember our pasts by. After all, most men don't keep journals. We don't gather photos into albums. We're not even especially good at hanging on to love letters (unless they contain explicit material). It's not that we don't get nostalgic. It's that we're too lazy or embarrassed or preoccupied to memorialize particular eras of our lives. And, thus, we're left with the strange detritus that constitutes AMJ." SP1: He explains that AMJ is what men use to remember their pasts by because they do not create all these different things that others may use to remember their lives by. GP2: "The point I'm continually trying to make to my wife is that my AMJ is not simply monument to my retentive neurosis or sloth. Those dusty objects are also time machines. Their value resides in the particular set of memories and emotional associations held by their owner. They have made that hallowed passage from physical objects to, dare I say, religious relics." SP2: He uses imagery to give his audience a more emotional appeal to why AMJ is important to men. Logos: GP1: "Consider the donnybrook I got into with my first serious girlfriend. We had just moved in together, and in an effort to 'clean up the place' she tossed out my favorite sneakers. I will grant you that they had multiple holes and were perhaps malodorous. But I had bought these shoes in the Old City of Jerusalem and had worn them to climb Masada and wade into the Dead Sea (this helped explain their unique funk). I couldn't quite articulate this as a 21-year-old, but those shoes were a part of me. I never forgave her." SP1: By providing his own examples of AMJ, Steve Almond uses logic to express to his audience that although his girlfriend at the time did not see the importance of those sneakers, he held value to them. GP2: he talks about his wife's persistent complaint concerning the 4,123 CDs he mentioned earlier in the article and how he agreed to comply with her idea of minimizing that collection and states " I drag out a crate and start sorting through the discs, and invariably I find one-say, Destination Failure, by the Smoking Popes-and I slip it into the stereo and start thinking about how much that album meant to me when I was a miserable graduate student in Greensboro, North Carolina. Then I get all misty and crank up the volume and start dancing like an idiot." He then explains how he goes back upstairs and his wife "shakes her head." and he replies with "'No, seriously honey,' I say, 'you don't understand. This album got me through 1997!'" SP2: He uses the example of his endless number of CDs and how they mean a lot to him, but his wife does not understand that.
