Fill in the Blаnks   [q1]is chаrаcterized by frequent passage оf lооse, unformed, often watery stool. When a medical history of a patient with diarrhea is obtained, it is important to question the owner about the duration, severity, frequency, amount, and quality. Patients with this are prone to dehydration, so monitoring for and treating dehydration is of importance in ensuring complete patient care.  [q2] is characterized by the infrequent and often difficult passage of hard stool. A GI problem is caused by bowel obstruction or diminished bowel motility; however, it can also occur secondary to orthopedic pain (cannot posture to defecate), environmental stressors (e.g., poor maintenance of the litter box), and dehydration. It is essential to complete a full systems review when obtaining a medical history, to evaluate all potential causes.  [q3] is the presence of blood in feces. It can be seen with diarrhea or as streaks of blood on the outside of a normally formed stool. Hematochezia usually indicates a problem with the colon or the rectum.Melena is defined as the presence of digested blood in feces. The stool is characteristically a tarry black color. Melena may be seen in patients with upper GI bleeding caused by, for example, endoparasites, ulcerations, neoplasms, or coagulopathies. [q4] is defined as painful straining at urination or defecation. A thorough medical history and physical examination must be completed to determine which body system is involved. It is usually the result of colonic disease. The diagnostic approach to a patient with stomach or intestinal disease primarily involves fecal analyses (e.g., flotation, cytologic examination, virus detection, cultures), plain and contrast radiography, ultrasonography, endoscopy, surgical exploration, and biopsy of the GI tract. A minimum database (CBC, serum chemistry, urinalysis) helps document secondary problems, such as electrolyte imbalance and inflammation, but often in itself does not lead to a definitive diagnosis.
