You can use a paper dictionary. Once you are ready to move to the next question, answer the question below.  Part II Paper was first invented in China around 105 AD by a government official named Cai Lun. He improved earlier methods by using a combination of mulberry bark, old rags, hemp fibers, and fishing nets. These materials were soaked in water and beaten into a soft, fibrous pulp using wooden mallets. The pulp was then poured onto a fine bamboo or silk screen, which allowed the water to drain while leaving the fibers behind in a thin, even layer. The sheet was carefully lifted off the screen and pressed to remove extra water, then left to dry in the sun. Sometimes the surface was polished with a stone or brush to make it smoother for writing. This process made paper lighter, more flexible, and cheaper than earlier writing materials like papyrus, parchment, or palm leaves. For centuries, the Chinese kept the technique of papermaking a secret. Eventually, the knowledge spread to Korea in the 6th century and Japan by the 7th century, where local artisans adapted the method using native fibers. Later, the technique traveled west to Central Asia and the Middle East, especially after Chinese papermakers were captured during the Battle of Talas in 751 AD. From there, papermaking reached the Islamic world, with centers in Baghdad and Damascus, and eventually Europe by the 12th century, where the first paper mills were established in Spain and Italy. Over time, paper gradually replaced earlier materials and became the primary surface for writing, books, and official documents in many parts of the world. ___________________________________________________________________________________ *BC stands for “Before Christ.” It is used to label years before the birth of Jesus Christ. For example, 3000 BCE (or 3000 BC) means 3000 years before Jesus was born. *AD stands for “Anno Domini,” which is Latin for “in the year of our Lord.” It is used for years after the birth of Jesus Christ. For example, 105 AD is 105 years after Jesus was born.   Question 3 I finished reading Part II.
