Pаrt III: Essаy Write а thоughtful, detailed respоnse tо one of the following (at least 400 words; “A” essays usually go beyond minimum standards). Have a short opening paragraph that makes a main assertion about the topic (3-4 sentences).   Have body paragraphs that directly address the prompt. These should be the bulk of the essay.  Incorporate into your essay ideas and key terms that were brought up in class discussion, and use specific examples from the texts to support your points.  Do not, however, merely summarize the plot. End with a short conclusion (3-4) sentences that addresses the author intention for this work and brings your essay to a close. Include a word count (you must write this “by hand”—one point bonus added for doing so)** Note:  You may not use your textbook or an online text.  No direct quotes are expected unless they are vey short and you've already committed them to memory.  Specific details, though, are expected.  Topics: A.  Doctor Faustus Throughout the play, Doctor Faustus is given many chances to reform and avoid damnation.  Identify and analyze the numerous chances for redemption that Faustus encounters during the course of the play.  Where/why do they occur, and how does Faustus respond to them?  How do Faustus’ actions reveal his hubris as well as the issue of Faustus’ free will?  Ultimately, what kind of theological (religious) commentary is Marlowe making through the character of Dr. Faustus in this play? Make sure your essay discusses the following in detail:  BP #1: The scenes with the good/bad angel  (one body paragraph) BP #2: The scene where Faustus signs the contract  (one body paragraph) BP #3: The scene with the Old Man   (one body paragraph) BP #4 (Optional): Anything else that you think is relevant Conclusion:  What is Marlowe's moral vision for this play?  B.  Paradise Lost A)  After reading Book IX of Paradise Lost, one realizes that Milton has expanded greatly from his original text of Genesis in the Bible.  Discuss Milton’s characterization of  Adam and  Eve in light of his alteration and expansion of the Garden of Eden scene.   How does Milton present them in book IX?    What scenes/details has Milton added that work to characterize them, for better or for worse?  In your essay, be sure to:  Characterize Eve, before and after the Fall.  What traits does she reveal?  What scenes best illustrate them?  How is Milton presenting her in Book IX (two body paragraphs) Do the same for Adam:  how does Milton present him? How does he respond to Eve's offer, and why?  What traits emerge in Adam?  (two body paragraphs).  Conclusion:  How is Milton presenting this Garden of Eden scene in Paradise Lost?
