The Centrаl Ideа/Thesis The textbооk refers tо the thesis stаtement as the central idea of your speech. A good central idea will accomplish the following: Keep the speaker on course Keep a purposeful and well-organized speech Share what response the speaker wants from listeners Thesis Two parts to the thesis statement: A topic -indicates subject matter A comment -an important point about the topic Your thesis statement should answer these questions: What is the argument? What are the assumptions? Three important characteristics of thesis statements are interest, specificity and manageability. Let's take a look a these a little closer. Interest: Always keep your audience in mind when planning a presentation. What will they find interesting about your topic. If it's not interesting to you, it surely will not be of interest to them. What angle can you take that will really draw them in and keep their attention. Specificity: You need to make sure you use words that really express what you are trying to communicate. Manageability: You only have so much time to speak so you really need to make sure that your thesis statement reflects what you actually have time cover effectively. As the speaker, you are in control of how much time you spend on each main point. Consider this thesis statement is, "Vaccinations are dangerous." Does it meet our three criteria? Why or why not? If you said, "no," you are correct: Interest: While the topic may be of interest to some people, a revised thesis with more information would draw the audience's attention and better answer what the argument and assumptions are for the topic. Specificity: This is really lacking. What vaccinations? For who-children/adults/elderly? And what is meant by "dangerous"? Manageability: This thesis is way too vague. In a 5 or 6 minute speech, it is important to only cover what you can effectively with those time constraints. Follow up: Once you've written your speech outline, go back and make sure that your material fulfills the expectation(s) set out by the thesis. If not, revise it to be stronger and more accurate.
