4. Use the detаils in the fоllоwing cаse study tо аnswer questions A and B (30 points) Case study:  Suspected Rape and Homicide Charlotte arrived home after a night out on the town, having met friends for drinks to celebrate her promotion.  After the ride share had dropped her off, she looked up the stairs to her small, studio apartment that was over the garage of a larger house.  She went to unlock the door, but it was already unlocked.  Charlotte didn’t think too much about it, she had a bad habit of forgetting to lock her door when she was in a hurry.  As she stepped inside the dark apartment, she realized that the lamp in the main room wasn’t working, so she walked over to the bedside table next to her bed to switch on the small lamp.  She turned it on and sat down on the bed to check her phone.  Charlotte texted her friends and told them she had a great time that evening.  It had only been about five minutes since she had returned home, and she was tired and ready to bed, so Charlotte started to remove her clothes. Suddenly, a large man in a man black balaclava rushed out of the bathroom and Charlotte was hit over the head by a hard object and she fell to the ground.  Charlotte was fighting hard and ripped off the balaclava, which fell onto the bed.  The attacker wrestled Charlotte to the bed, which was covered in a thick comforter; he took a knife to her throat and told her to be quiet or he would kill her.  The man used rope he had brought with him to tie her hands together and used his knife to cut her bra and underwear off.  After the man sexually assaulted her, he slit her throat and left her on the bed.   He reached down and grabbed an item to clean himself off, while Charlotte lay on the bed, bleeding profusely from her neck wound, and not moving.  Suddenly, a motion light sensor from the garage area went off, lighting up the outside of the apartment, and light poured in through the apartment window.  The owner of the house had stepped out of the house, which had set off the light next to the garage and apartment.  The attacker was startled by the bright light streaming in the window of the apartment and looked outside to see the owner coming out of the garage. In a panic, the attacker quickly dropped what he using to clean himself up (he didn’t realize it was his black balaclava that had been removed).  The man quickly got dressed, rushed out of the apartment, down the stairs and into the night.  The owner saw the man running away through the woods behind the house and hurried up the stairs to check on his tenant; to his shock, he saw Charlotte on the bed with a large amount of blood pooling on the comforter.  He then quickly called the police. Now use this information to answer the questions below. Describe how you would process this crime scene, starting with describing the duties of the first responding officer. Including any tests or processes you would use to record the scene and precautions that you would take. List which items of evidence you would collect from the scene and your rationale for doing so. Describe how you would package the evidence and why. Then, describe in detail, the process(es) the laboratory analyst would use back at the lab to search and analyze the black balaclava for the presence of any biological samples (both semen and blood). Include in your discussion search techniques, the detailed information relating to color change, timing and chemical reactions of presumptive and confirmatory tests for both semen and blood.
