Cоnsider а scenаriо in which а persоn tries to lift a heavy object off the ground. We’re interested in how different lifting positions/postures affect the forces generated in the lower back muscles. For this purpose, we can assume trunk movement is only happening in the sagittal plane. We are interested in how much force the back muscles (the erector spinae muscles) have to generate to pull the trunk upwards (i.e., a positive torque about the axis of trunk flexion/extension, which is the center of the lumbar-sacral disc). Using steps 1, 2, and 3 from your lecture notes, we would isolate the system and then reduce it, like this, then adding a coordinate system. Now, draw all the forces acting on the rigid body. This will be your free body diagram! Label each force, and then upload your diagram here.
