The early nineteenth century saw the rise of a new middle class in the United States and a shift in both middle-class values and family dynamics. A major change of this era was the trend that middle-class families preferred to postpone employment for family members until adulthood. This ideal, called [BLANK-1], was available only to families who could do without their offspring’s labor. The new middle class preferred a period in which boys and girls were sheltered within the home and nurtured through primary schooling. Those who were afforded these opportunities often entered respectable, well-paying positions when they matured and those who did not tended to become dependent workers with little prospects for social mobility.

The Growth of Democracy that occurred in the United States in the 1820s and 1830s was fueled by the [BLANK-1]. This included massive campaigns featuring the use of broadbills, rallies, parades, and candidates with nation-wide name recognition who would ply would-be supporters with free food and drink. Martin Van Buren was a master of this novel approach and used it effectively in order to get Andrew Jackson elected president.

The oldest of the initial Afflicted Girls during the Salem Witch Scare, [BLANK-1] was 17 when the crisis began in 1692. She was a war refugee from Maine whose parents died during a Native American raid during King Philip’s War, and whose grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and some siblings died in a second Indian attack some years later. As such, she was a Maine refugee and an orphan who was forced to work as a servant and who had experienced significant first-hand trauma related to Indian Wars. Her afflictions and accusations of witches began in the context of King William’s War, a renewed period of tension between the English colonists and French and Indian rivals. Historians have theorized that the threat of Wabanaki Indian attacks near Salem may have contributed a great deal to the hysteria of the witch crisis. This Afflicted Girl was one of the most prolific accusers of the Salem Witch Scare and is theorized to have been the leader of the group of accusers. As the crisis expanded throughout Essex County, she was among the girls taken to Andover and Topsfield to identify potential witches through the use of spectral evidence.

In 1773, Parliament passed the Regulatory Act which put the troubled East India Company under federal control. Soon after, it passed [BLANK-1]. This allowed the company to sell to the colonies directly and bypass having to pay the usual export fee in London. Despite the lower cost of the commodity, colonists resisted as they resented the company’s monopoly. Colonists’ displeasure led to the most famous and visible protest in American history in Boston in December 1773.

He brought the world to the brink of nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis during the Kennedy Presidency. Years before that event, he famously argued with Vice-President Richard Nixon in defense of the Soviet System during the Kitchen Debate in 1959.
