Darwin observed that the finches on one of the islands of the Galapagos had beaks that were large and strong and used for cracking open the hard exterior of nuts to get to the nutrients inside. He postulated that long ago, the finches had weak beaks like those of neighboring islands, but those finches with slightly stronger beaks could eat more nuts, have more food and have a better chance of surviving long enough to produce offspring.
