A urine culture is set up from a clean catch urine specimen using a 0.01 ml loop. After 24 hours of incubation the BAP has 247 colonies of a grey, moist organism and 50 colonies of a white beta hemolytic organism. The EMB plate has 200 colonies of a pink organism. The UA results were: Nitrite (+), WBC: 20-30/field (increased), 0-5 epi’s/field (normal). Does the patient have a UTI?If so, how many pathogens are most likely present and what do you know about the pathogens based on their growth on each plate? If there is an infection present, what would the colony count be reported as for each organism (if there is more than one pathogen present, report for each organism)?
