10. (21pts) Ionization energy of Al and Mg. What is the ground state electron configuration for a neutral aluminum (Al) atom?  You can write the full configuration or the noble gas/condensed configuration. A photon with a wavelength of 207.2 nm will eject an electron from a neutral Al atom in the gas phase. The energy of this photon corresponds to the first ionization energy (IE1) of Al. Calculate the energy of this 207.2 nm photon in Joules (J). Show all your work.  What is the effective nuclear charge (Zeff) experienced by a valence electron in Al? Show all your work. What is the ground state electron configuration for a neutral magnesium (Mg) atom?  You can write the full configuration or the noble gas/condensed configuration. A 162.2 nm photon is needed to eject an electron from a neutral Mg atom in the gas phase. The energy of this photon corresponds to IE1 of Mg.  When a 207.2 nm photon (like the one from part (b)) interacts with a neutral Mg atom, no electron is ejected. Explain why this is the case. What is the effective nuclear charge (Zeff) experienced by a valence electron in Mg? Show all your work. Explain the reason for the difference in IE1 of Mg compared to IE1 of Al. (In other words, which first ionization energy is larger, Mg or Al, why do they differ in that manner?) Be sure to include the Zeff from parts (c) and (f) in your reasoning.
