Clearly you could sample 1000 plots and have ample data to do so; but you do not have the time, energy or money to sample that intensively. How will you know how many plots to sample? I.e., how do you know when you have sampled enough plots to detect and record most of the species richness but have not wasted your time by sampling too many plots unnecessarily?
