1. Paul Tillich defined idolatry in a past reading ( Ultimate Concern) thus: “Idolatry is the elevation of a preliminary concern to ultimacy.” (p. 13, in FTS) 2. In the present reading ( 25. Theology and the Human Situation), Tillich asserts that it is “necessary to seek a theological method in which message and situation are related in such a way that neither of them is obliterated.” He then goes on to say that his method of doing theology will employ a “’method of correlation’ as a way of uniting message and situation.” (p. 75, FTS) Thesis: According to Tillich, a theology that does not employ a “method of correlation” is/is not necessarily idolatrous.
