Body Paragraph 2-Evaluation of Logos-This paragraph focuses…

Body Paragraph 2-Evaluation of Logos-This paragraph focuses on the writer’s reasoning. Follow the guidelines for supporting body paragraphs: Include a topic sentence.  Example: Aiken established sound reasoning, or logic, throughout this work.  Include context/background: Explain the appeal in one or two sentences; What is logos? Why is it important?   Include the evidence and warrant Introduce the logos strategy (See strategy listed before the quotes below.) *Smoothly integrate (signal)  textual evidence #1 in the form of a quote with a parenthetical citation. Choose a quote from the list below.  follow-up the quote with explanation or commentary about  how it demonstrates sound reasoning.   Tip:  Your follow-up should go beyond simply stating the quote is an example.  Explain how it contributes to or strengthens Aiken’s argument.  Since you are only incorporating one piece of textual evidence, I expect the explanation to be more in-depth. Include a closing sentence.  *Textual evidence options. Choose one strategy and quote below to incorporate into this paragraph. Logos Strategy Textual Evidence Maslow’s theory and indicated meanings  “Abraham Maslow’s famous ‘hierarchy of needs’—the needs that demand our attention and motivate human beings to survive, adapt, and evolve—you’ll see them all met online in one manner or another: from physiological needs to needs for safety, love, belonging, esteem, self-knowledge, and self-actualization. Online anonymity offers you a sense of safety. Joining an online community, or participating in a multiplayer online game, can give you a sense of belonging. Getting your Instagram photos or Facebook posts ‘liked’ meets a need for esteem. But that’s just the beginning of social-networking rewards and pleasures” (p. 619).  data/statistics “a study shows that an average adult with a mobile phone connected to the Internet checked his or her phone more than two hundred times a day” (p. 621).    indicated meanings or reasons “Just as substance addicts are constantly fighting urges provoked by related stimuli, the alerts and notifications on a mobile phone can cause its user to have an uncontrollable urge to check his or her device” (p. 622).  theories/scientific facts “It’s an accepted fact in behavioral psychology that intermittent reinforcement is much more effective at motivating people than continuous rewards. If you are rewarded randomly for an activity, you are likely to continue doing it—far more likely than if you are rewarded each and every time” (p. 618). data/statistics “A telephone survey conducted by researchers at Stanford University a decade ago showed a rate of 12.5 percent of the U.S. adult population sample reporting they had ‘at least one problem’ due to overuse of  the Internet—often email checking, gaming, visiting cybersex sites, or shopping” (p. 626).   data/statistics “Greenfield’s research found that while 98 percent of respondents said that they are aware that texting while driving is dangerous, nearly 75 percent admitted having done it” ( p. 627).  indicated meanings or reasons “Searching online—whether you are hunting down a piece of information, shopping for a pair of shoes, or looking for an old classmate or professional contact—rewards you in another powerful way” (p. 619).
