Cаse 2: Annа is аn 80-year-оld right-handed female, whо survived an ischemic strоke. She has a history of hypertension (HTN), coronary artery disease (CAD), osteoporosis, and hearing loss.  She is a new resident in a long-term care skilled nursing facility (SNF/nursing home). She is widowed and is survived by 3 children and 8 grandchildren, who live locally.  Anna was referred for a speech and language evaluation because she is having difficulty communicating wants and needs to the nursing staff.  Your assessment revealed auditory comprehension for simple yes/no (Y/N) questions to be 50% accurate, one step commands with model 5/10.  Confrontational naming assessment revealed an ability to name 3/10 objects with tactile and phonemic cues; jargon, perseveration and phonemic errors were noted. She is able to repeat 9/10 words.  When asked how many grandchildren she had she replied “Well now there’s dat eba, dandy they go “whoop” up and cat, cat and cat by…” followed by a pause, possibly to think. Later, when the therapist pointed to a picture and asked, “Anna, how many grandchildren do you have 5, 6, 7 or more?” she replied by nodding her head and a thumbs up sign and said “8”.  Family interview revealed that Anna was an elementary school teacher before she retired.  Her favorite foods are sweets like ice cream and pie.  She loves when her school-age grandchildren visit, and she enjoys sharing children's books with them as her reading of simple material is relatively intact.   QUESTIONS: (Please label your responses A, B, C, D, and E) (A) What is Anna's most likely aphasia type? (2 points) (B) Why do you think she has this type of aphasia? Use no more than 3-4 sentences to explain (additional sentences will not be graded). (3 points) (C) List the name of 1 restorative approach AND 1 compensatory approach that you would use with Anna (2 points) (D) Why did you choose the restorative and compensatory approaches you selected in (C)? Use no more than 3-4 sentences to explain for EACH approach (additional sentences will not be graded). (3 points) (E) Using EITHER the restorative or compensatory approach you selected in (C), describe how you would implement this treatment approach at the impairment, activity, AND participation levels. (6 points)

Cаse 1: Yоu hаve been аsked tо assess Mr. Halpert, and find him watching TV, laughing at seemingly apprоpriate segments of the program.  When you ask him, "What happened to you?" He stated, "Um..Stroke. Office and meeting. Presenting. I read aloud but I cant..stroke." In response to simple yes/no questions, he responded correctly to 7/10 questions.  He was ABLE to successfully repeat only 3/10 words you asked him to repeat.   When you asked him to name objects in his room, he called a chair a "hair" and comb a "lome".  QUESTIONS: (Please label your responses A, B, C, D, and E) (A) Which domain(s) still need to be assessed (meaning this domain/modality has not been assessed AT ALL)? (1 point) (B) Based on your assessment so far, what is Mr. Halpert's most likely aphasia type? (2 points) (C) Why do you think he has this type of aphasia? Use no more than 3-4 sentences to explain (additional sentences will not be graded). (3 points) (D) Mr. Halpert said “lome” instead of comb when asked to name the object in his room. Is this an example of a semantic paraphasia or a phonemic paraphasia? (1 point) (E) Why did you chose your answer in D? Use no more than 3-4 sentences to explain (additional sentences will not be graded). (3 points)
