Essay (40 points) Directions: Choose one of the following topics and write a detailed, focused response that fully answers the question(s). The response must be a minimum of 400 words, but recognize that “A” essays usually go well beyond minimum standards. Include a word count: you will receive one additional bonus point for doing so. Do not put your name or an MLA heading on the essay. I grade these submissions anonymously. Write a short introduction and a short conclusion. Do most of your writing in 3–4 body paragraphs. Do not make your response one giant paragraph. In the Canvas text box, separate paragraphs by hitting Enter twice (leave a blank line). Do not indent paragraphs (do not use the Tab key). Include specific examples from the text and incorporate key ideas from the PowerPoint/videos. Do not include quotations unless they are short and you have already committed them to memory. No books, notes, etc. are allowed. Do not merely summarize the plot. Have ideas, address the topic directly, and use details from the text to prove your points. Go well beyond information you have already mentioned on this exam. Topic A: The Iliad Discuss the impact of Patroclus’ death on Achilles. How is Patroclus’ death a catalyst for change in Achilles? In your essay, be sure to examine the following: Achilles’ immediate response to the news of Patroclus’ death in Book XVIII. How does he react, and why? How are his mother’s words to him significant here? (One body paragraph) Achilles’ thoughts and actions after Patroclus’ death. How does he feel about himself? About others? How does he begin to show other aspects of his character not seen until this point? (One to two body paragraphs) Achilles’ actions during the crucial scene with Priam in Book XXIV. You must discuss and evaluate this scene in detail. Be sure to focus on Achilles, not Priam. (One body paragraph) Optional: You may expand any one of these sections into two body paragraphs if you’d like. Final words: Ultimately, what role did the death of Patroclus play in Achilles’ transformation? Topic B: The Epic of Gilgamesh Gilgamesh is a complex character—one who is flawed and displays weaknesses, yet one who changes and shows a capacity for growth. In an essay, discuss the evolution of Gilgamesh’s character. Be sure to discuss the following in detail: Gilgamesh in his encounter with Humbaba. Why does he want to slay him? In what way does he reveal his very human qualities and shortcomings in this encounter? (One body paragraph) Gilgamesh and his friendship with Enkidu. What impact does Enkidu’s death have on Gilgamesh? What is his immediate response to Enkidu’s death? How specifically does he show his grief? What are his thoughts? How would you characterize him at this moment? (One body paragraph) Gilgamesh’s visit to Utnapishtim. What is it he seeks, and why? How successful is he? Be sure to discuss the loaves of bread and the plant in this section. (One body paragraph) Optional: You may expand any one of these sections into two body paragraphs if you’d like, or add a fourth point to address this prompt. Conclusion: How is Gilgamesh a different man from what he was at the beginning of the text?
