In the late 1940s, large radio conglomerates like NBC, CBS, and ABC applied for and received television licenses from the FCC (which did not issue any other licenses from 1948-1955, thus giving them a de facto television monopoly). These companies were known as [BLANK-1] and applied the organizational structure of radio to television, focusing on variety and comedy shows in the earliest days of television. The limited number of channels meant that networks selected programs that appealed to a very wide audience. Non-controversial shows like Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver dominated. Since audiences had a limited number of channels to choose from, viewing experiences were broadly shared. More than two thirds of television-owning households, for instance, watched popular shows such as I Love Lucy. Television therefore had a large role in shaping what American values, life, and family should look like in the 1950s.

How do you explain the context in which the assassination of one man in 1914 could lead to a general, global war?  What were the attitudes of the various populaces as they marched off to war?  What explains America’s delayed entrance into the war?  What, ultimately, drew the United States into World War I?Describe the business culture of 1920s America. How had labor practices changed since the Progressive Era in the preceding decades? How did the presidential administrations of the 1920s impact business culture and labor practices? Why might historians claim that the presidents of the 1920s contributed to the Great Depression?

[BLANK-1] was a Lakota Sioux Chief during one of the greatest atrocities that Native Americans faced from the United States. A group of 350, including 100 women, sought refuge at the Pine Ridge Agency in late 1890 and they were escorted to Wounded Knee Creek. When U.S. Cavalry forces attempted to disarm this man’s tribe on December 29, a brief skirmish turned into a massacre when the Americans fired heavy weapons indiscriminately into the camp. Between 150-300 Lakota men, women, and children were dead. The event, known as the Wounded Knee Massacre, marked the end of sustained Native American resistance.

President Benjamin Harrison supported the passage of [BLANK-1] which called for roughly 50% taxes on foreign imports. This was the most extreme measure of its kind but led to the first “Billion Dollar Congress” and increased government spending. The economic policy proved unpopular, however, and the massive spending initiatives were deemed a waste by conservative members of the electorate. Harrison’s support for the policy also came at the expense of two Pro-Black bills he championed as Republicans in congress needed to compromise with Democrats in order to pass the economic initiative.
