(3) Eunice Eunice, 67, is an avid surfer and book publishing magnate who suffered a head injury in a surfing accident when she hit her head on rocks in the ocean.  Eunice was rushed to Florida Hospital for immediate care, but she has been in a coma for two days.  Eunice currently has a ventilator and feeding tube.  Nurse Woodrow was able to find information to locate Eunice’s family. Eunice’s adult son Oscar, and ex-husband Edgar have rushed to her bedside.  Despite being divorced for 10 years, Edgar and Eunice remained close and Edgar still loves Eunice dearly.  Dr. Montgomery speaks to both Edgar and Oscar: “I am very sorry about Eunice’s accident.  She suffered a severe injury to her head, and it appears she sustained extensive neurological damage.  We’ve done everything we can, but I don’t see much hope for her full recovery.  If she ever wakes from the coma she’s in, chances are she would not be the Eunice you used to know.  We can give it another day, but if she doesn’t improve, chances are she sustained more injury than we thought and she is really in a persistent vegetative state (PVS).  It’s time to start saying your goodbyes, and I think it would be best to disconnect her ventilator and feeding tube.”    Edgar keeps vigil at Eunice’s bedside for the next three days, and is approached by Oscar who tells him, “Dad, you need to give it up.  She’ll never be the same, and this is a sign you need to move on.  She never would have wanted to live like this.  You’re not even married to her anymore, I am the one making the decision! Let her be at peace.”  Edgar responds to Oscar by saying, “Of course you want her gone so you can have access to her million dollar publishing empire.  Divorced or not, I’m the one who really loves her and I should be making the final decision.  She has a lot of fight left in her, and I am sure she will recover fully, even if it’s against the odds.”    Edgar wonders what recourse he has at this point because he believes Eunice will recover and does not want her ventilator and feeding tube removed.   (Note: For the sake of time, do not address possible futility issues in this question but focus on the other one main issue you identify.)
