English 101 Diagnostic Writing                                              For your first in-class writing assignment, you will read, summarize, and briefly analyze a text. I will be providing feedback for what you write, but please note that this essay is diagnostic in nature; in other words, it will show me what you know, and what you need to work on. As long as you turn in your best efforts, you will receive a passing grade on this assignment. Step 1: Read the article provided by your instructor. Take notes/highlight/mark the text as you read—look for the author’s thesis, and note specific details that support the thesis, and ideas that resonate with you in some way. Step 2: Response part I. Write a one-two paragraph summary of the text. Include the main ideas, written in your own words. Highlight the main ideas, but exclude minor details. Response part II. Write one-two paragraphs of response to the article. What is the author’s overall purpose in writing this essay? What goal is the author trying to achieve? Can you relate this work to the current time period in some way? You may also include any connections you made between the article and your own experience if you can you share those ideas in a general way. (Hint: What might the author be trying to accomplish by writing this essay?  Is this essay merely for entertainment or is there a deeper message or lesson to be learned? Is there some action the author wants the reader to take after reading the article?)  Format: MLA format page set up—Put this MLA heading (below) at the top left of your essay, and follow it with a centered title.
