Hegel thought the progress of history was spiritual or the process and progression of our ideas. He called this progression a dialectic.  Marx thought that Hegel’s view of history was true if it could be made material instead of spiritual. Thus, Marx’s resulting philosophical view is known as Dialectical Materialism.  (Hint: He is a communist, but his fundamental philosophical view is not known as communism.)
