Karl Marx said that he found “Hegel standing on his head,” and therefore had to turn him so he could stand on his feet. Hegel thought the progress of history was spiritual or the process and progression of our ideas. He called this progression a dialectic. Marx thought that Hegel’s view of history was true if it could be made material instead of spiritual. Thus, Marx’s resulting philosophical view is known as Dialectical Materialism. (Hint: He is a communist, but his fundamental philosophical view is not known as communism.)
