Written Response Pick only ONE prompt This is a closed book test. Choose one prompt and write a developed response (3-4 or more paragraphs). Be as specific as possible when referring to the text. Often we respond to a story which seems to illustrate an important truth about the human condition. Choose one of the stories you read for class and discuss its apparent message—theme. Try to use specifics and examples from the story to support your observations. Closed book test. What kind of man is the character of Abner Snopes in “Barn Burning?” Why does the little boy, Colonel Sartoris, rebel, waver, and then ultimately rebel against his father? “Harrison Bergeron” explores the ideas of equality and what that can really mean; using the different characters of George, Hazel, Diana Moon Glampers, and Harrison, analyze these characters and what they reveal about “being equal” in this story’s society. In “The Lottery,” Tessie Hutchinson is this year’s stoning victim. How are the events, dialogue, and the setting which lead up to the stoning ironic? Does Jackson achieve her goal: “To shock the story’s readers with a graphic demonstration of the pointless violence and general inhumanity in their own lives”?
