Purulent material is obtained from a carbuncle and submitted for bacterial culture. The direct smear reveals many gram-positive cocci and WBCs. The culture shows growth in the primary broth and on the sheep-blood agar plate and no growth on the MacConkey agar plate. The colonies on the blood-agar plate are butyrous and beta-hemolytic.
