The next three exam questions refer to the following quotation from one of the Vaccination Graphic Novels we looked at in class. In the 1700s, Edward Jenner observed that milkmaids that caught cowpox didn’t catch small pox. To prove that cowpox was the key to immunity he performed an experiment. Using a lancet covered with ooze from a cowpox sore Jenner made 3 small cuts in the arms of a healthy young boy (the son of his gardener). The boy got cowpox and was sick for a few days but soon recovered. Shortly after the boy recovered from cowpox, Jenner tested his hypothesis and repeated the procedure using infectious material from a patient dying of smallpox. Again, the boy got sick, but didn’t get smallpox and more importantly didn’t die. The young boy soon recovered and this method turned the tide on the fight against smallpox and many other disease. Jenner called this new method “vaccination.”
