Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Jr. earned three Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards and ESPN’s “greatest NBA point guard of all time” as a Los Angeles Lakers and All-Star NBA player. He earned the nickname “Magic” when a sportswriter saw him earn 36 points, make 16 rebounds, and make 16 assists in a single high school game. Magic Johnson retired three times in the 1990s. At the time of his first retirement, Magic publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with a serious health problem. Early symptoms of this disease are often nonspecific and may include fatigue, weight loss, fever, and night sweats, but the condition can later increase susceptibility to viral-induced cancers. Research has shown that psychological stress and depression can adversely affect the immune system and speed the progression of this disease. Magic recalls that it took him about a month after the diagnosis to realize that he’d be living with this for the rest of his life but he is okay with that – “This is another challenge in my life. It’s like your back is against the wall. And you have to come out swinging. And I’m swinging.”

Cherilyn (Cher) Sarkisian has been a passionate and flamboyant force in the entertainment industry for over 40 years, as a singer, songwriter, and actress, and as a political activist and humanitarian. Cher and her first husband, Sonny Bono, created a popular variety show in the 1970s. After their divorce, she went on to release solo platinum albums and star in several movies, receiving Academy Awards for her roles in Silkwood and Moonstruck. But, in the early 1990s, Cher was diagnosed with a condition in which she “wasn’t able to work for almost three years.” She recalls that she was constantly sick and that the condition was “devastating.” One of the predominant symptoms of this disease is extremely low energy, despite a lack of activity. When asked whether she thought it was a psychosomatic illness, Cher replied, “My experience was that it was really a physical illness, but it does make you depressed as well.”

Brett Favre began his college football career as seventh-string quarterback, but by the second half of the third game of the season, he became the starting quarterback. With the Green Bay Packers, he enjoyed the longest string of starts (297 games) for any quarterback in NFL history. Throughout his career, Favre dealt with a number of serious injuries. As a result, he used and abused medications for chronic pain. Favre had a seizure during an ankle surgery in 1996. The seizure, which was related to his addiction, served as a wakeup call for him to seek treatment. He told the media, “Believe me when I tell you that this is going to be hard, but I have faced tougher trials and succeeded,” he said. “I will not allow myself to be defeated by this challenge.” Six months after completing treatment, he led the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl victory against the New England Patriots.
