They find two things they think could be limiting the range: 1) the beetles are found in conditions where there is more water available and not in drier areas, and 2) beetles are absent from areas that have a certain species of bird but present where there are no birds. They set up an experiment using 4 different conditions in an area where the beetles are not found, using 30 replicates of each plot type: unaltered plots (dry, birds present) greater water availability (matching the areas where beetles are found) exclusion of birds, no water added greater water availability and exclusion of birds They introduce 200 beetles to each of their plots, and count the number of surviving beetles every week for four weeks.
