In the documentary Two American Families 1991-2024, there is this central premise that despite long hours and relentless efforts, many workers still struggle to cover housing, healthcare, education and childcare costs. Wages have stagnated while the cost of living has surged and the promise that effort equals upward mobility may not always be the case. Today, a full-time job doesn’t always guarantee a livable income. Two or even three jobs might still leave families one emergency away from financial ruin. The real question isn’t whether people are working hard enough–it’s why hard work no longer pays off the way it once did.
