An 85 YO female was found semiconscious during a well-check visit by her grandson and 911 was called. The patient was able to tell EMS that she had been feeling sick for a week, and she complained of a fast heartbeat, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. She also said she had been in bed for three days and had been unable to get out of the bed to answer the phone. Upon arrival at the ED, her vital signs were as follows: temp. 39 degrees Celsius, heart rate 100, respiratory rate 22/min. She was admitted to the ICU with an admitting diagnosis of acute respiratory distress due to COVID-19, and she was treated with medications that were administered intravenously. However, the patient continued to decline and endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation for 36 hours was required to treat the acute respiratory failure.
