Some of the first weather forecasters were farmers trading postcards by mail, sharing stories of what the rain, snow, and wind were doing to their livelihoods.  Thomas Jefferson bought his first thermometer while writing the Declaration of Independence and his first barometer a few days after it was signed. Jefferson made daily weather observations until six days before his death in 1826.  The weather network in the U.S. became a reality in 1847, and by 1860, there were approximately 600 daily weather observers working with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
