Having mental “spare time” while listening is the result of speech rates of 125 words per minute and thought rates of 500 words per minute.

Listening is a natural ability that almost everyone possesses is a common but false assumption about listening.

Remember this term as you practice your persuasive speech: a “disfluency” creates an impression that the speaker is not very competent.

Active listening occurs whenever you are attentive to the verbal and nonverbal information being shared by a speaker.
