PART II – Essay Please choose ONE of the following questions and provide a detailed response incorporating themes and events from lecture, as well as the primary documents from your readings. Also, be sure to identify and answer all parts of the question in order to receive full credit.   1.) In our third unit we’ve seen the institution of slavery grow rapidly along with the developing nation, while at the same time becoming an ever-increasing point of division among those who support it, and those who work for its abolition. Using several key examples from our final chapters looking at African slavery in the antebellum years, briefly retrace the key events behind the proliferation or rapid growth of slavery into the American frontier as well as what factors helped maintain order among the large slave populations of the South. Additionally, how did the relatively small planter class successfully convince the large majority of Southern yeomen and government officials to not only allow its existence, but actually support its un-checked expanse in the forceable future and even go to war over the issue? Did anyone speak out in opposition to this institution? If so, who and for what reasons? Be sure to provide as many specific examples and key terms from the unit as possible to support your answer.   2.) Due to ongoing changes taking place within the country in the decades following Jackson’s presidency, Americans attempted to redefine society and make order of the chaos around them. How did a growing wave of newly emerging religious, literarily, philosophical, economic, or social reform, movements come to shape a rapidly changing American nation during the middle of the 19th century?  Be specific as to what movements, concepts, and individuals, you are discussing, as well as, how those aspects shaped particular elements of the American identity. Keep in mind that a complete response will address several of these leading movements while presenting a detailed and balanced account of each. Be sure to provide as many specific examples and key terms from the unit as possible to support your answer.   3.) By far the bloodiest conflict in American history, The Civil War finally seemed to extend the inalienable rights discussed in the Constitution to all men, although these would continually be tested and restricted during the decades following the war. Using specifics from your reading and lecture in unit 3, explain the direct causes for the war and some of the ways conflict was avoided in the decades leading up to the war. Also explain why the conflict could no longer be avoided by 1860 and briefly explain how the war played out once it began.  You should also mention why this war was such a devastating one in terms of human loss and destruction of property. Finally, discuss the results of the war for the citizens of both North and the South. Be sure to provide as many specific examples and key terms from the unit as possible to support your answer.   4.) In Unit 3 we closed our class by focusing on the volatile decades following the Civil War as the nation attempted to heal its wounds and resolve differences while looking to toward the future. Using what we have learned so far about the influence of this period on America’s continued development, briefly recount the story of Reconstruction in order to show how the nation attempted to reconcile itself in the decades following the Civil War. How did Reconstruction start? In what ways did it change over time and what eventually brought it to an end? What were some of the key laws and organizations working toward racial equality during Reconstruction and why did they fall short? How did a reluctant Southern population seem to systematicity fight against this progress at every turn? What laws, ideas, or organizations, worked to restore the antebellum social order in the post-war South? Be sure to provide as many specific examples and key terms from the unit as possible to support your answer.
