You place a plant cell and an animal cell in a hypotonic environment. Assume both cells cannot actively respond to this environment to change the impacts of osmosis (i.e., just consider the impacts of the environment, not anything the cells might try and do to avoid these impacts – something we will learn in later courses cells may actually be able to do!) This means for our purposes we are just considering the structures of these cells and how water will flow in response to the cells and environment. Outside help is not allowed. Identify the direction(s) of flow of water, and compare and contrast what would happen to each cell – i.e., what would happen that is the same, and different, to each? In a few sentences, please explain.

Influenza viruses contain an RNA genome surrounded by a prot…

Influenza viruses contain an RNA genome surrounded by a protein capsid (coat) and a lipid envelope (membrane). They rely on two surface proteins (haemagglutinin, HA, and neuraminidase, NA) to bind to host cell receptors to gain entry. Once inside a cell, influenza viruses hijack the cellular functions and effectively turn the cell into a virus-producing factor, with the synthesis of viral genome and proteins allowing virus particles to assemble and exit the cell. This overall process is representative of what viruses in general accomplish when infecting cells. Based on this information and your understanding of the definition of life, are viruses alive? Please explain, including in your answer specific definitions of what it means to be alive, and addressing whether or not these apply to viruses.   Copyright 2024 by Edmonds College Department of Biology.
