Module 09 – Self-talk & Mental Imagery: Question: Nate notices that following 6 weeks of his mental imagery training, he is kicking the ball farther, kicking the ball more accurately, and able to pass the ball farther than 6 weeks prior. If imagery is contributing to these improvements, Nate’s experiences are consistent with findings that show mental imagery catalyzes ______. Nate’s Back Story: Nate played college football before transitioning to Rugby when he realized he would not make it in the NFL. He has transitioned to the sport well and now finds himself competing for a spot on the U.S. Rugby 7s Olympic Team. Because he is still transitioning to the sport of Rugby, he sometimes feels lost during competition and reverts to football specific skills he’d practiced since he was in Pop Warner. He decides to meet with a Sport Psychology Consultant who prescribes some PETTLEP based mental imagery training. In Nate’s mental imagery script, he is instructed to wear his uniform while imagining passing, executing a line out, a garryowen (up and under) kick-pass, and kicking a penalty goal.

Module 10 – Practice Structure: Practice Description: Jameson frequently loses points on long rallies. Jameson’s team identifies several factors that might contribute to his failures in these scenarios including fatigue, a loss of concentration, and a lack of strategic shot placement. To improve this aspect of his game, Jameson’s team sets up a rally drill in which he has to return shots from 3 different ball machines that each deliver 3 distinct shots. This drill lasts 20-30 balls, and Jameson is never able to predict the type of shot he will receive from the machines. Thus, he is never quite sure which type of shot he will have to execute. Question: This is an example of ______ and ______ practice. Jaemson’s Back Story: Jameson is a tennis player who seemingly has all the technical skills necessary to compete in the ATP world tour. However, when he gets into tournaments, he rarely makes it out of the first round, and never out of the second. He decides to hire a new coach and Sport Psychology Professional who collectively develop a new practice regimen.
