READ THIS BEFORE STARTING Building mood in a text Writers, especially fiction writers, build up a mood of a scene through the language, punctuation and structure they use. Mood is about how the text makes you feel – whether it’s happy, sad, frightened, anxious, excited. As we explored in class, the writer’s use of language, punctuation and structure creates a subtext, and it is in exploring the subtext that we can see the mood and feeling that the writer is trying to create.
