Let’s consider how another approach to ethics would address the “Ring of Gyges.”   Gyges, who finds a magical ring which allows him to become invisible chooses to use the ring to steal, seduce, abuse and kill.  Because he is invisible there are no “consequences” for his actions.  The question that  asks is, “Why shouldn’t he do as he pleases?”  “Why should he care about morality?”    This approach would claim that RIGHT behavior involves actions that benefit ALL members of the community.  Gyges’ actions promote ONLY his good and not the good of the WHOLE community.
