A particular gene in Drosophila is essential for proper embryonic development. However, it is not active in embryonic cells at all times during growth. The Western (protein) and Northern (mRNA) blots below show expression of this homeotic gene at various points during development in drosophila. This will tell you if the mRNA (Northern) and/or the protein (Western blot) are expressed in the egg or embryo at any given time. The entire embryo was used to obtain protein (Western blot) or mRNA (Northern blot). (Embryo age = hours) At what stage of development does transcriptional activation of the embryo’s own genome become active for this particular gene?
