Interestingly, Myrmecia pilosula was originally described as a single species; but it actually consists of several distinct, closely related species with females having diploid chromosome numbers of 18, 20, 32, 48, 60, 62, and 64. Yet all the ants look pretty much alike! Assume that a cross occurs between a female of Myrmecia species (A) with 32 chromosomes and a male Myrmecia species (B) with 9 chromosomes (remember, males are haploid and transmit all their chromosomes to each sperm cell). How many chromosomes would be expected in the somatic (non-gametic) cells of the hybrid females?
