Then answer this prompt in 250 to 300 words at most: In your scholarly opinion, how well does this empirical study present support for the Working Memory model? In your response, consider the strengths and weaknesses of the described research method as well as how the conclusions align (or not) with the model.    MODEL OVERVIEW Working memory is the mental system that temporarily holds and actively uses information while you are thinking, learning, and solving problems. It allows you to keep information in mind and manipulate it over short periods of time, such as when following directions, doing mental math, or understanding a sentence. According to this model, working memory includes specialized components that handle different types of information. The phonological loop temporarily stores and processes verbal and auditory information, such as words, numbers, and sounds—for example, when you repeat a phone number in your head to remember it. The visuospatial sketchpad temporarily stores and processes visual and spatial information, such as images, locations, or the layout of a room—for example, when you picture a map or visualize rearranging furniture. These systems allow working memory to handle both verbal and visual information at the same time, but working memory has a limited capacity, and information will fade quickly unless it is actively maintained.    ABSTRACT  A number of experiments explored the hypothesis that immediate memory span is not constant but varies with the length of the words, including the number of sound units (i.e., phonemes) within the word, to be recalled. Results showed: (1) Memory span is inversely related to word length across a wide range of materials, and (2) Span could be predicted on the basis of the number of words which the subject can read in approximately 2 seconds. The results are interpreted in terms of a sound unit-based (i.e., phoneme) store of limited temporal capacity and as an additional part to a working memory system.
