Introductory Paragraph • Begin with a brief introduction to the play and topic• End with a clear thesis statement containing three analytical points Example thesis structure: This essay argues that Oedipus fits Aristotle’s definition of a tragic hero because he is a man of high renown, he possesses a tragic flaw (hamartia), and his actions lead to a tragic fall. Body Paragraphs Each body paragraph must address one of the three points stated in the thesis. Each body paragraph must include: • A clear topic sentence stating the analytical point• Explanation and analysis of the idea• At least one quotation or paraphrase from the play• A correct MLA in-text citation Concluding Paragraph • Briefly restate the thesis• Summarize how the evidence supports the argument Citation Requirements Use MLA in-text citations when referring to the play.
