READING SELECTION: Animаl Testing In the lаst 100 yeаrs, nearly every scientific breakthrоugh has оccurred as a result оf animal testing. In fact, animal research has contributed to major advances in understanding and treating conditions such as breast cancer, brain injury, leukemia, cystic fibrosis, malaria, multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis, and many others. Chris Abee, Director of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center's animal research facility, states that "we wouldn't have a vaccine for hepatitis B without chimpanzees.” Similarly, the polio vaccine, tested on animals, has reduced the global occurrence of the disease from 350,000 cases in 1988 to 27 cases in 2016. Each year nearly, 26 million animals are used in research experiments of medicines and other products intended for human use. Supporters of animal testing cite the numerous amounts of medical advances that have occurred in the past years as the main reason for animal testing. Animals provide the only alternative to testing on a living organism, which is as close to a human being’s body as possible. Animals, themselves, also benefit from the testing done because they too are often cured of illnesses and even saved from extinction in some cases. Moreover, animal testing is highly regulated; therefore, animals are treated kindly and are protected from mistreatment by the laws in place. Conversely, opponents of animal testing are just as vocal, citing that animal testing is cruel and inhumane. Animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, and the infliction of burns and other wounds to study the healing process. Animals, therefore, suffer immensely, when in fact, there are other alternatives. With computer models, as well as such processes as in vitro testing, studies and experiments can come up with conclusive results faster than doing tests on animals. Furthermore, animals are very different physically and metabolically, so the results gathered from animal experiments do not necessarily predict the same results in human subjects. WRITING PROMPT: Should animal testing be banned? Please support and explain your position in a well-developed essay.

Prоblem 1 Descriptiоn: Custоmer Arrivаls аt а DMV office are random and independent; the probability of an arrival in any time-slot of a ten-minute duration is the same as the probability of arrival in any other time slots of ten-minute duration. Based on historical data, on the average five customers are expected to arrive at this DMV office in a ten-minute slot. You are interested in improving the customer service process at the DMV office. The above Problem Description applies to Problem 1, Questions 1 through 16. Note: To make it convenient for you, I have copied this problem description into the questions below wherever you need it. That limits the need for going back and forth and scrolling up-and-down and it will save plenty of time for you on the exam. Note: You must answer all the questions for this problem. For any questions that require Excel to find answers, I must see you working in Excel in the Honorlock recording. If I don't see you working on the Excel file with Excel functions in the Honorlock recording and if less than honest means are resorted to, the Exam cannot be graded. Your work and your work alone must reflect on this Exam. You will be submitting Excel file at the last question. Indicate the Question number for the answers your are going to show in Excel. Note: Any resources you use on Canvas, must be visible in the Honorlock recording. If students use any resources other than the textbook and the resources on Canvas, that amounts to academic integrity violation and will be reported to USF for further action, Note: Students are prohibited from copying and discussing the questions before, during, and after the Exam with anyone else. Students are prohibited from sharing their Excel files with each other. All such things amount to violation of academic integrity. Any academic integrity violations will be reported to USF for further action. As long as students work on the Exam honestly, there is nothing to worry about. Thank you.
